Am I Nocturnal?

Sana Ahmad

“Do they not see that We made the night that they may rest therein and the day giving sight? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.”
[Al-QuranSurah An-Naml (The Ant):86]

I try to keep my schedule according to this, but I don’t think I am very successful at it. This ayah is especially difficult to implement when there is a wedding or a function. All such events take place starting late at night and we end up coming home very late.

I don’t like to sleep late, because then I feel the following day is completely wasted. Most days other than the class days, my mother and I go out shopping for groceries or run around to complete other errands.

There are times when I do go to bed at night at the right time, but am unable to sleep. I toss and turn all night long. I believe it has to do with what I ate for dinner that evening. For example, if I eat something sweet or drink too many soft drinks, I become active and have trouble sleeping. One should be careful of what they eat for dinner to have a sound sleep.

Another thing that affects the night’s sleep is an afternoon nap. Even if I end up taking a very short afternoon nap, I still can’t sleep at night.

I think I can do a lot to change my schedule. Here is a list I can implement:

  • Not sleep in the afternoon
  • Watch what I eat at night
  • Do not waste my time under the covers in the morning and jump right out of bed. I could use the time for something more constructive.
