April Fools’ Day: Who is the Real Fool?

Farah Mughal Wafai

“You’re what?” I asked in disbelief. “You’re moving where?” I nearly choked on my Pepsi.

My friend with whom I had been friends with for over 14 years had decided to mention her moving to a different country in a very casual manner.

“Turkey; I love it there. So, I’ve decided to move there,” she replied her eyes lowered while playing with her straw in her soda.

“Uh, okay fine. I wish you all the best, and I’ll make dua for you,” was all I could say. I was hurt and annoyed at the same time. I was upset  at how calm she was at all of this.

On seeing my reaction, she suddenly burst out in laughter.

“What’s so funny?” I shot a glance at her.

“Don’t you know what today is?” she laughed with glee.

I knew what day it was; it was Friday. What an absurd question my dear friend had asked.

“It’s Friday, right?” I asked her.

“Yes, but it’s also April Fools’ Day. So, Happy April Fools’ Day, you  fool!” She giggled at her joke.

“Wow! You went through all that trouble of lying to each one of your friends, posting it on emails and Facebook and for what?”

My friend didn’t respond.

“Was all of this to make a fool out of me?” I questioned her. I hadn’t felt so hurt by a dear friend before.

“I guess.” She managed in a squeaky voice.

“You guess? So, you don’t even know whether your efforts paid off or not? Then tell me, who is the real fool?”

  1. It’s so true.We tell jokes which are mostly based on lies.It is these kind of things that spoil relationships. The gist of Rasool Allah SAW’s hadith is woe to one who tells lies to make people laugh.

  2. Naheed says:

I never really thought about those who fool others as those who really fool themselves!
