Skin Color Is ONLY Skin Deep!

Uzma Jawed

A curious 4 year-old girl asked her 8 year-old sister, “Why am I brown? Why can’t I be white, like our baby sister?”

Her 8 year-old sister replied, “Well, would you like to be black? Be happy with the way you are, otherwise Allah(https://i2.wp.com/www.sunniforum.com/forum/images/smilies/taala.gif )will make you black!”

Their mother, who was also a student of the Quran, had just studied Surah Ar-Rum, ayah #22 in her class. She decided to share this ayah with her children through an exercise to make them understand.

She asked her children to stretch out their arms and place them on the table. She stretched out hers too. She then asked them, “Are all our hands the same color?”

The children answered excitedly, “No, they are different!”

The mom then quoted:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَانِكُمْ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّلْعَالِمِينَ
“And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.”
[Al-Quran- Ar-Rum (The Romans): 22]

She further asked them, “Would you like all the flowers to be the same color?”

They answered, “No!”

Then, she asked, “Would you like all the fruits to look, taste and smell the same?”

They again said. “No!”

The mother added, “Would you like it if there was only one kind of toy in the whole world?”

They cried, “No!”

Thereafter, the mother concluded, “So that’s why Allah https://i2.wp.com/www.sunniforum.com/forum/images/smilies/taala.gif has created so many different languages, colors and variety in this world so that we can enjoy and appreciate the diversity that exists. Hence, we should be grateful for all the blessings that Allah(https://i2.wp.com/www.sunniforum.com/forum/images/smilies/taala.gif) has given us.”

She then invited her children to join her in calling upon Allah (https://i2.wp.com/www.sunniforum.com/forum/images/smilies/taala.gif), and together they invoked Allah( https://i2.wp.com/www.sunniforum.com/forum/images/smilies/taala.gif) with this dua:

O Allah, as You have beautified my external form, so make my character beautiful as well.!”

Ameen!

I loved the examples given of having the same coloured flowers, fruits, toys, etc. brings everything into perspective! variety is the spice of life. In fact some say that darker people have more beautiful facial features, while fairer people look beautiful mainly because of their colour. So there is beauty either way! M

    • This reminds one of [Al-Hujuraat, 49:13] “Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At?Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the pious)”

    Asa,
Unfortunately, this taboo of judging people by skin colors is so deep-rooted in our culture and society. Alhamdulillah, for how Allah (SWT) has guided us and He is so just.

We all need to know the reference of this ayah to explain to people and remind oneself of the message of this ayah. Especially when our dear ones comment on “how black” or “how white” a person is and especially when they are out searching for son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws! How can we so easily disregard something that Allah (SWT) has created! Rather we need to learn to APPRECIATE this diversity in colors and languages instead of making fun. May Allah guide us.
